Description
Description
An Army Class A service jacket constructed in olive drab wool and unattributed, with no tailor’s or manufacturer’s label present. The rank is indicated by a single silver bar affixed to each shoulder strap, correctly denoting a First Lieutenant. The lapels are fitted with gilt “U.S.” collar devices paired with crossed rifles insignia, identifying Infantry branch service.
The left shoulder bears a black embroidered AIRBORNE tab with yellow lettering, worn above the shoulder sleeve insignia depicting a white eagle’s head on a black shield, consistent with wartime U.S. Army Airborne divisions. The jacket is fitted with a Second World War French Croix de Guerre fourragère, consisting of a braided red-and-green cord terminating in a metal aiguillette tip, signifying a unit-level French award for gallantry. The right shoulder bears a U.S. Army Airborne Command shoulder patch, indicating assignment within an airborne command formation during the period.
The left breast is fitted with a group of insignia consisting of a Parachutist Badge, denoting airborne qualification, worn below a Combat Infantryman Badge, reflecting infantry combat service. Below these is a U.S. Army Marksmanship Qualification Badge fitted with three suspended qualification bars for Machine Gun, Rifle, and Pistol, indicating qualification with multiple infantry weapons.
The right breast bears a Presidential Unit Citation ribbon bar. The left breast carries the Good Conduct Medal ribbon at the top, followed by the European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal ribbon, the Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal ribbon, reflecting service across multiple theatres of the Second World War.
The lower left sleeve displays one gold overseas service bar, indicating a minimum of six months’ overseas service during wartime. The interior is fully lined in brown rayon and exhibits standard wartime construction throughout. The jacket measures flat at approximately 38 cm across the chest, 40 cm at the waist, and 60 cm in overall back length.
The jacket remains in good service-worn condition, showing honest period wear including light surface wear to the wool, minor fraying to embroidered insignia edges, and patination to metal devices.
Footnote: During the Second World War, U.S. Army Airborne Infantry units were among the most heavily engaged formations of the American ground forces, trained for parachute assault and frequently committed to high-risk operations across multiple theatres of war. Officers serving within these units combined infantry leadership with airborne qualification
