United Kingdom. A Queen’s South Africa Medal, to Pte. Ward, Manchester Regiment

In silver, full size, rim impressed 5792 PTE. J. WARD. MANCH: REGT, with TRANSVAAL, ORANGE FREE STATE and CAPE COLONY clasps, dark patina, light discolouration on reverse, ribbon slightly discoloured with residue around the clasps, light contact marks, dark patina on obverse, remains very fine.

The battalion arrived in South Africa in late 1899 and was immediately drawn into the opening phase of the war. It fought in the Natal Campaign, most notably at the Battle of Elandslaagte (21 October 1899), where the Manchesters took part in the successful British assault that temporarily pushed back Boer forces. They later participated in the defence of Ladysmith, enduring the famous siege from November 1899 to February 1900, suffering casualties from shellfire, disease, and shortages.

After Ladysmith was relieved, the 2nd Manchesters joined operations as British forces advanced into the Boer republics, fighting in actions across the Transvaal and Orange Free State. When the war shifted to a mobile guerrilla phase (1900–1902), the battalion took part in blockhouse construction, patrols, convoy escorts, and sweeps aimed at restricting Boer commando movements. Their service continued until the end of the conflict in May 1902.
