A 1914-15 Star, the reverse bearing a dedication to “REV. H.J. PHILPOTT, A.C.D.” for the Reverend Herbert John Philpott, Army Chaplains’ Department, with the naming officially impressed, demonstrating some toning to the base metal, in near extremely fine condition.
Footnote: Herbert John Philpott was born on 20 November 1870 in Creech St Michael, Somerset, to parents John and Maria. He trained as a Wesleyan (Methodist) Minister and evangelized and held clerical roles throughout England. Philpott enlisted as a Chaplain to the Forces on 5 August 1914 (as per the London Gazette) and was deployed to Egypt on 5 November 1914. He became Assistant Principal Chaplain to the Egyptian Expeditionary Forces and, for his service, was Mentioned in Dispatches (as confirmed on medal roll index card). Philpott survived the war, entitled to the full medal trio, and left service on 15 November 1919 owing to ill health (as per the London Gazette). The previous September, Philpott (with rank of Lieutenant Colonel) gave a special service in advance of residing at Gateshead, County Durham, where he would serve as a Wesleyan Minister. He died on 13 June 1941 in his hometown of Creech St Michael, Somerset.
