Tunisia, French Protectorate. An Order Of Glory, Iii Class Commander, By A. Chobillion, C.1915

(Nishan al-Iftikhar). Instituted in 1843 by Al-Mustafa ibn Mahmud. 3rd Model, Type V with Cypher of Muhammad V an-Nasir (1906-1922). A silver ten point star with alternating red and green enamelled rays, with three faceted rays between each star point, centerpiece bears a ring of individuals facets with a the cypher of Muhammad V an-Nasir on a green enamelled background, on a bow suspension, reverse plain, makers mark “AXC” (A. Chobillion) on suspension ring, stamped with boars head mark on the reverse below the integral suspension and on the obverse on the suspension ring, denoting French manufacture and a .800 silver fineness (1858-1962), measures 67.5mm (w) x 90mm (l - inclusive of bow suspension and laterally pierced integral ball), enamels intact, slight oxidation to silver rays, on original neck ribbon, lightly soiled with one missing tie, overall extremely fine condition. In it’s hardshell case of issue, comprised of brown leatherette, green velvet medal bed in interior with silk lining in the lid, functioning clasp, measures 105mm (w) x 161mm (l) x 30mm (d), wear to exterior along corners slightly stained along right side, silk along hinge, medal bed appears to be reattached as it does line up along the left side, overall near very fine condition.

Footnote: The Order of Glory was was instituted in 1835 by Al-Mustafa ibn Mahmud, the Bey of Tunisia and awarded to members of the ruling house, senior public servants and to senior officers for acts of bravery. It was awarded in six grades: Grand Cordon, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, Knight 1st Class, and Knight 2nd Class. The order was awarded until the constitutional role of the Bey was abolished in 1957.
