(Orden de las Damas Nobles de la Reina María Luisa). Instituted 1792. An finely enamelled white Maltese cross with Gold borders and a delicately enamelled purple frame in Gold, each quadrant featuring alternating hand-carved lions and castles in Gold connected by a thin chain, obverse centre medallion in white, purple and black enamels set in Gold, superimposed elaborate hand-painted figure of Saint Ferdinand, reverse with enamelled white and brown central medallion depicting the cypher of Maria Luisa surrounding by the inscription “R’ Orden De La Reina Maria Luisa” (Royal Order of Queen Maria Luisa), surmounted by Spanish style laurel wreath also in Gold, measuring 43.76mm (w) x 69.50 (h - inclusive laurel wreath suspension), weighing 56.9 grams (including ribbon), worn on original full length sash, missing integral suspension ring from laurel wreath (sewn directly to ribbon), visible repairs to enamel on cape of Saint Ferdinand, on period silk sash, otherwise better than extremely fine.

Contained in original case of issue composed of wood and purple velvet, exterior presents a silver Spanish coat of arms, the interior presents a black velvet medalbed with ribbon space below, the lid is a purple silk stamped in the center with the maker mark M. Cejalvo Joyeria Cruz 11 Madrid, measures 101.87mm (w) x 163.69mm (l) x 48.89mm (d), hinge and clasp functional, light wear to exterior corners, and center of interior lid, very fine condition.

Footnote: The Order of Noble Dames of Queen Maria Luisa was founded by Charles IV King of Spain on April 21, 1792. It was established at the behest of his wife Queen Maria Luisa who wanted to recognize the services of Court Ladies. The Order was initially restricted to noble Ladies who displayed extraordinary talents and distinguished services. The recipients were personally chosen by the Queen of Spain. Currently, the Order is awarded to women who displayed philanthropy behaviour which helped to encourage culture and understanding of Spain.
