(Orden al Mérito Agrario). Instituted 1905. Juan Carlos I issue. Type I. A multi-rayed enameled green eight-pointed star in silver, with obverse featuring a woman plowing the field, surrounded by an enameled white border inscribed MERITO AGRARIO "Agrarian Merit", as well as by a chain composed of linked Zodiacs symbols in silver, surmounted by a Spanish royal crown in silver gilt and red enamels, with beneath enameled typical of time period Spanish coat of arms also in silver gilt, presenting plain reverse, measuring 50.68 mm (w) x 54.87 mm (h - inclusive of integral ball), with ornament loop suspension on original ribbon, near to mint.
Footnote: The Order of Agricultural Merit was founded in Spain by King Alfonso XIII on December 1, 1905. It was awarded in recognition of those who had encouraged the agricultural practices in Spain. The Order was annulled by the Second Spanish Republic in 1931, and it was reinstated by General Francisco Franco on October 14, 1942. It was finally re-instituted as the Order of Agrarian, Fishery and Alimentary Merit on February 27, 1987, and new categories were created including Agrarian Merit, Fishery Merit, and Alimentary Merit.
