Description
Description
A well-preserved Hlinka Guard dagger, measuring 370 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 220 mm-long magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip, sharpened edges, and with fullers running the length of each side. The obverse ricasso is marked with a partially-legible number of what appears to be “72”. The blade sits securely within a curved bronze crossguard, stamped on the obverse with a mark of “HG’. A single piece of polished and curved dark brown wood comprises the handle grip, and is inset on the obverse with a bronze insignia consisting of a raised Slovak Cross, measuring 18 mm in diameter. It completes with a stylized bronze pommel consisting of a double-sided eagle’s head, fastened together with a rivet which securely maintains the structural integrity of the dagger. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft. Bronze fixtures are secured in place with dual side rivets at both the tip and throat. The latter retains a functional spring catch, securely holding the dagger in place during storage, and features an integral loop connecting to a hanger. The former is composed of a dark brown leather strap, adjusted with a functional magnetic metal buckle, completing in a functional spring clip for uniform suspension. Issues consistent with age and use are evident, and include some running marks to the blade, oxidation of the metal features, and loss of scabbard paint. The dagger is in an overall better than very fine condition.
