Portugal, Kingdom. An Order of the Tower and Sword, I Class Grand Cross

 Instituted June 17, 1847. Type II. (1833-1917). Two I Class decorations, comprising a Sash Badge, in silver gilt and enamels, featuring a white enamelled five point star with pointed ball finials and a green enamelled laurel wreath in each quadrant, a tower at 12 o’clock, the obverse medallion featuring a sword with a wreath, encircled by a blue enamel ring inscribed VALOR LEALDADE E MERITO, reverse medallion features a book with the surrounding inscription PELO REI E PELA LEI, measures 59.0 mm (w) x 70.1 mm (h), weighs 40.94 grams, enamels chips to the tips of the white rays and areas of the green wreath, unmarked, remains very fine. 

The Star, also in silver gilt, portraying a white enamelled five point star with pointed ball finials, a cluster of faceted rays in each quadrant, with a tower at 12 o’clock, the obverse medallion featuring a sword with a wreath, encircled by a blue enamel ring inscribed VALOR LEALDADE E MERITO, the reverse offers a vertical pin with dual stays, marked with a boar’s head on the pin denoting post 1838 French manufacture, measures 69.23 mm (w) x 77.86 mm (h), weighs 67.30 grams, enamels chis to central medallion wreath and sword, lovely toning, in extremely fine condition.
