Germany, Wehrmacht. A Model 38 Horse and Mule Gas Mask, with Case, by Drägerwerk

(Wehrmacht Pferdegasmaske 38). A well-preserved Model 38 horse and mule gas mask, constructed of a heavy slate-grey rubber casing, featuring frontal and lateral filters fixed in position with rubber straps securing magnetic metal loops, with the former unfastening to allow for filter replacement, with a hollow interior featuring a malleable lip to form a tight seal around the animal’s muzzle, flanked on each side by magnetic metal buckles accompanied by matching multi-piece brown leather straps to allow the mask to be firmly attached to the animal’s head, one side stamped with a Waffenamt mark and date of “40”, measuring 28 cm (w) x 23.5 cm (l) 20.5 cm (h), accompanied by its original case, constructed of light olive-drab canvas, retaining all original brown leather straps and metal D-rings, with a hollow interior custom-fitted to accommodate the accompanying mask, stamped on the exterior with a mark of “DRAEGER” indicating manufacture by the firm of Heinrich und Bernhard Dräger (Drägerwerke), with minor material fatigue visible to the rubber base of the mask and and leather accoutrements, a rare and complete example in near extremely fine condition.
