Germany, Third Reich. A Pair of Badges for Combat and Sports Merit

(Abzeichen). A pair of badges, including:

1. An Infantry Assault Badge, Silver Grade, constructed of silvered zink, the obverse consisting of an oval oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, topped by a Heer-style German national eagle clutching a mobile swastika, diagonally across the badge is a Karabiner 98k rifle with the bayonet attached and the carrying sling hanging from the rifle, the reverse with a raised barrel hinge and vertical pinback meeting a large integral catch, unmarked but demonstrating the characteristics of a documented variant produced by an unidentified manufacturer, measuring 47.96 mm (w) x 63.07 mm (h), weighing 32.5 grams demonstrating loss of finish and surface oxidation throughout, a scarce variant in very fine condition.

2. A DRL Sports Badge, Bronze Grade, constructed of bronze, the obverse consisting of an oval oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by a ribbon defaced by a mobile swastika, surrounding stylized initials “DRL”, the reverse with a barrel hinge and vertical pinback meeting a flattened catch, maker marked “WERNSTEIN, JENA”, measuring 38.51 mm (w) x 48.16 mm (h), weighing 17.9 grams, in extremely fine condition.
