As historians and researchers, we have managed sensitive articles and materials with the greatest of care and respect for their past and present social context. Description
Description
(Stadt Bremen Polizei Tschako). A well preserved city of Bremen Municipal Police shako, constructed of a black vulcanfibre canister with a faux leather exterior finish. It is topped by a flattened black polished adornment which is secured in place around the circumference by machine stitching. The sides are flanked by dual non-ferrous mesh ventilation holes. Pinned onto the peak of the shako is an insignia consisting of a silvered bronze starburst pattern, with a central raised Bremen coat of arms set within a circular oak leaf wreath. The insignia measures 110 mm (w) x 90 mm (h) and is topped by a removable tricolour aluminum cockade, itself measuring 35 mm (w) x 62 mm (h). It is flanked on each side by protruding aluminum rivets which secure in place a black leatherette chinstrap, itself adjusted with dual functional aluminum buckles. When not in use, the chinstrap rests upon a narrow protruding black vulcanfibre visor. An additional visor of identical construction at the reverse provides neck protection for the wearer The interior features a tan-coloured leather sweatband with nine fingers, each perforated with six eyelets. The crown bears an intact “EREL” mark and a maker’s mark of “ROBERT LUBSTEIN, BERLIN”, along with a size mark of “57”. Notably, the reverse of the sweatband features a stamped manufacture date of “1939”, a Bremen distribution mark, and a handwritten owner’s name of “MINDERMANN”. The shako measures 200 mm (w) x 250 mm (l) x 165 mm (h) (not inclusive of cockade). Issues consistent with age and use are evident, and include loss of finish to the metallic insignia and some material fatigue to both the leather and vulcanfibre features. It is in an overall better than very fine condition.
