Description
Description
(SS Dienstdolch M33). A well-preserved Schutzstaffel (SS) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to the edges and tip. Acid-etched onto the obverse is an inscription of “MEINE EHRE HEIßT TREUE” (“MY HONOUR IS LOYALTY”) in Fraktur script, while the reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “GOTTLIEB HAMMESFAHR, SOLINGEN-FOCHE”, circumscribing the firm’s classic pyramid logo. The blade sits securely within a nickel silver upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom, while Roman numerals “III” stamped onto the reverse indicate distribution to Berlin district personnel. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of black stained wood which is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h), while a blackened and silvered SS insignia is set into the pommel and measures 9 mm in diameter. The dagger culminates in a nickel silver lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, which retains a rounded pommel nut that maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is its original scabbard, constructed of a black anodized magnetic metal shaft. Nickel silver fixtures are secured to the tip and throat with side rivets. The latter retains a functional interior catch to firmly hold the dagger in place during storage, and features a loop for the accommodation of a hanger, which is included and consists of a black leather strap adjusted with a functional buckle and culminating in a spring clip, in turn connecting to a black leather strap with a D-ring. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include running marks and pitting to the blade with evidence of cleaning and polishing, some wear and scratching to the handle grip, and minor fatigue to the leather. This early and untouched example remains in a better than very fine condition.
