Germany, SA. A Model 1933 Service Dagger, with Hanger, Late-Issue by E. & F. Hörster

(Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch M33). A well-preserved Sturmabteilung (SA) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the edges and tip. The obverse bears an acid-etched inscription of “ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND” (“EVERYTHING FOR GERMANY”) in Fraktur script, while the reverse ricasso is marked with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M7/36”, indicating manufacture by E. & F. Hörster, Solingen. The blade sits securely within a plated metal alloy upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. A single piece of brown wood composes the handle grip, and is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the pommel is a partially-silvered SA insignia measuring 9 mm in diameter. The dagger culminates into a plated metal alloy lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, which retains a rounded pommel nut that securely maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is its original scabbard, constructed of a brown painted magnetic metal shaft. Plated magnetic metal fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat. An integral ring emanating from the latter accommodates a hanger, which is included and consistent of a functional metal spring clip affixed to a blackened leather strap adjusted with a functional buckle. The clip is maker marked with the logo of Overhoff & Cie, Lüdenscheid, along with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M5/71” for the same. A functional catch within the scabbard’s throat firmly holds the dagger in place during storage. Some issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include running marks to the blade, loss of plating to the hilt fixtures, a central crack to both sides of the lower crossguard, and some surface oxidation of the scabbard fittings. This late-issue example remains in a very fine condition.
