Germany, Luftwaffe. A Lot of Awards and Documents to Oberfelwebel Paul Scheuermann, Night Fighter Pilot and Western Front KIA

(Luftwaffe Auszeichnungen und Verleihungsurkunden). A lot of awards and documents to Oberfeldwebel Paul Scheuermann, a decorated night fighter pilot who was killed in action near Avesnes, France, on 9 July 1943 during the Defence of the Reich. It includes:

1. A medal bar featuring three decorations, including a War Merit Cross II Class with Swords constructed of bronze, on loop for suspension with its period original ribbon, consisting of a Maltese Cross with pebbled arms and with crossed swords piercing the centrepiece, the obverse bearing a central wreathed mobile swastika, the reverse bearing a central wreathed date of “1939”, without visible marks, measuring 48.15 mm (w) x 48.56 mm (h), in extremely fine condition; a Wehrmacht 4-Year Long Service Award, constructed of magnetic metal, on loop for suspension with its period original ribbon pinned with Luftwaffe device, the obverse bearing a raised Heer-style German national eagle clutching a mobile swastika, circumscribed by an inscription of “TREUE DIENSTE IN DER WEHRMACHT” (“FAITHFUL SERVICE IN THE WEHRMACHT”), the reverse bearing a wreathed number “4”, unmarked, measuring 30.27 mm in diameter, demonstrating moderate surface oxidation, in very fine condition, and; a Sudetenland Medal, constructed of bronze, on loop for suspension with its period original ribbon, the obverse bearing two raised figures, one of which is clutching a flag and the other a length of broke chain, above a German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, the reverse bearing a central wreathed date of “1. OKTOBER 1938”, circumscribed by an inscription of “EIN VOLK, EIN REICH, EIN FÜHRER” (“ONE PEOPLE, ONE NATION, ONE LEADER”), unmarked, measuring 32.26 mm in diameter, in extremely fine condition; all suspended from a 95 mm-long bronze bar with a magnetic metal backer and horizontal pinback, unmarked, in near extremely fine condition.

2. A1939 Iron Cross II Class, constructed of iron and silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, consisting of a Cross Pattée with a blackened magnetic iron core within a ribbed silver frame, the obverse with a central mobile swastika, the six o’clock arm with a reinstitution date of “1939”, the reverse six o’clock arm with an initial institution date of “1813”, unmarked, measuring 44.09 mm (w) x 48.75 mm (h), in better than very fine condition, affixed to a card stock backer pasted with Scheuermann’s original award document, named to him as an Oberfeldwebel of I. Gruppe, Nachtjagdgeschwader 4, awarded at headquarters on 28 June 1943, certified by the handwritten signature of Generalmajor Werner Junck (Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, 9 June 1944), measuring 14 cm (w) x 20 cm (h), in very fine condition.

3. A Luftwaffe Technical School certificate confirming Scheuermann’s qualification to rise from Feldwebel to Oberfeldwebel upon completion, indicating that he attended from 1 October 1941 until 31 December 1944, effective 30 December, measuring 21 cm (w) x 29.5 cm (h), in extremely fine condition.

4. An official promotion document in accordance with the former, elevating Scheuermann from Feldwebel to Oberfeldwebel effective 1 March 1943, indicating that he was part of Nachtjagdgeschwader 4, certified by the handwritten signature of Oberst Rudolf Stoltenhoff, measuring 21 cm (w) x 30 cm (h), in extremely fine condition.

5. A Wehrpaß, constructed of a field-grey card stock binding with 52 paginated interior pages, notably opening with a non-regulation and unstamped studio portrait of Scheuermann harvested from a German Life Saving Association (DLRG) identity card, featuring stamped and handwritten entries dating Scheuermann’s service from 29 October 1935 until his death on 9 July 1943, confirming his receipt of the accompanying awards (specified as the Sudetenland Medal, Wehrmacht Long Service Award, and War Merit Cross II Class with Swords, all without dates, in addition to a separate entry for the 1939 Iron Cross II Class with a matching date of 28 June 1943), closing with a stamped and certified entry indicating that Scheuermann was killed during operations on 9 July 1943, measuring 10.5 cm (w) x 14.5 cm (h), a researchable example in extremely fine condition.

Footnote: Volksbund records confirm that Paul Scheuermann was killed on 9 July 1943 in the vicinity of Avesnes, France, and is buried in the military cemetery at Fort-de-Malmaison.
