Description
A smooth shaped cabinet teacup in white porcelain, the exterior side with a portrait of Hindenburg in uniform with awards (including a Pour Le Merite and 1914 Iron Cross) clutching a pair of binoculars surrounded by a thin gold applique oval, and an exterior green painted wreath, a wreath also encircles the rim and the base, both of which feature a gilded rim, the delicate gilded handle with a soft arabesque, plain interior, the bottom of the base bears the raised date 1915, with makers mark denoting the factory of Hutschenreuther Selb, the teacup measures 115mm (w – across the top including handle) x 92mm (h), a lovely teacup showing light wear to gilded edge, no cracks or chips, in extremely fine condition.
The saucer, in white porcelain with a central raised gilded rim to host the teacup, features the superimposed inscription Aus Großen Zeif 1914-1915 (From Great Times), the exterior rim presents a wreath pattern matching the teacup, base is marked Hutschenreuther Selb, and is lightly impressed 1096 in the slightly depressed ring, the saucer measures 166mm (diameter), very minor contact marks around the exterior rim, no cracks or chips, in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und Hindenburg was a German Field Marshal and statesman who led the Imperial German Army during the First World War. He later served as President of Germany from 1925 until his death in 1934.
Hutschenreuther porcelain factory began production in 1814. The company was established by Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther in Hohenburg an der Eger. Lorenz Hutschenreuther, Carolus’s son, opened another factory in Selb in 1857.
