Vatican, Papal States. An Order of St. Sylvester, Grand Cross, c.1930

Instituted October 31, 1841. A Grand Cross Sash, consisting of silver gilt, a white enamelled Maltese cross with silver gilt rays in each quadrant, the obverse medallion presenting St. Sylvester on a blue enamel field, surrounded by the inscription SANC. SILVESTER. P.M., the reverse featuring the coat of arms of the Vatican, surrounded by the subscription MDCCCXLI MCMV, measures 63.1 mm (w) x 60.4 mm (h), weighs 41.38 grams, minor enamel damage to the tips of the rays, missing the sash, a lovely decoration in very fine condition. 

The Star of the Order, in silver, an eight point star of faceted rays, white enamelled Maltese cross with silver gilt rays in each quadrant, the obverse medallion presenting St. Sylvester on a blue enamel field, surrounded by the inscription SANC. SILVESTER. P.M., the reverse presenting a single thin vertical pin, measures 87.6 mm (w) x 87.6 mm (h), weighs 85.3 grams, edges of rays very dark, enamels presenting light chipping on the arms, pin and hinge functional, in very fine condition.
