Germany, Imperial. A Wartime Photo Album Documenting the Battles for Przemyśl

(Festung Przemyśl). A fascinating wartime photo album, constructed of a card stock binding, the cover bearing a hand-applied inscription of “PRZEMYŚL - WÄHREND DER BELAGERUNG, DER RUSS. INVASION UND NACH DER WIEDEREINNAHME” (“PRZEMYŚL - DURING THE SIEGE, THE RUSSIAN INVASION AND AFTER THE RECAPTURE”), the interior content consisting of 28 card stock pages pasted with 96 private and mass-produced period photographs, documenting the wartime experiences of Austro-Hungarian and German forces in the city of Przemyśl, including images of the the ultimately successful October 1914-March 1915 Russian siege of the noted fortress city, with scenes of defences, inhabitants, and battle damage, through to the German-led recapture of the city on 3 June 1915, supplemented by images of key commanders of Austro-Hungarian, German, and Russian forces, with several portraits of uniformed Russian soldiers as specimens, accompanied by succinct handwritten captions, measuring 25.5 cm (w) x 21 cm (h), demonstrating some discolouration and material fatigue, the latter including the detachment of several pages from the album’s string binding, a fascinating account of a key engagement on the Eastern Front of the First World War in near extremely fine condition.
