A mug style teacup in white porcelain featuring an embossed portrait in blue glaze of Hindenburg with specific raised relief to his mustache and collar, surrounded by a gilt oak leaf wreath, the lip has a thick gilded rim, connected to a gilded handle, the bottom presents the green makers mark of Rosenthal Kunst-Abreilung Selb-Bavaria, also numbered 5215 16, measures 98mm (w – inclusive of handle) x 104mm (h), light wear to the gilt on the handle, no cracks or chips, in extremely fine condition.
The saucer, in white porcelain, features an exterior gilt rim with an oak leaf pattern border, and central inscription Erinnerung aus großer Zeit 1914/15, the bottom presents the makers mark of Rosenthal Selb Bavaria, measures 132mm (diameter), sticker residue on the bottom, gilt intact no chips or cracks, in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: Phillip Rosenthal began operating in the porcelain industry in 1884 in Erkersreuth, near Bavarian Selb. In 1910 and 1920, artistic ceramic divisions were opened. The company was lost during the second world war, as Philip was forced to leave Germany. His son, also named Philip, returned to Germany and succeeded in regaining control of the company in 1950. In 2000, the company became part of Hutschenreuther and is now traded as Rosenthal GmbH.
