(Kaiserliche Marine Reservistenkrug für den Reservist Battermann - SMS Von der Tann). A superb commemorative reservist stein, constructed of glazed white porcelain, the exterior decorated with striking hand-painted imagery, consisting of a central depiction of the Moltke class battlecruiser SMS Von der Tann, flanked by imagery of Imperial German Navy sailors bidding farewell to loved ones, surrounded by flags and an airship, surrounded by laurel and oak leaves spanning the entirety of the outer circumference of the stein, the base featuring a list of Reserve sailors in service with the vessel between 1910 and 1913, the lower quarter featuring additional hand-painted imagery of sailors in different stages of service, topped by a dedication in memory of the owner’s service aboard SMS Von der Tann, dated “1910-1913”, and situated above an owner’s rank and name of “RESERVIST BATTERMANN”, featuring protruding hand fastened with a pewter hinge and thumb piece, the latter topped by a German national eagle, connecting to a pewter lid decorated with nautical scenes and topped by a Kriegsmarine sailor clutching a standard flag, opening reveal a partially-visible lithograph on the base, unmarked, measuring 12 cm (w) x 39 cm (h), a chip to the base has been repaired with putty, demonstrating no other notable damage or wear, a scarce example commemorating the service of a sailor aboard the Imperial German Navy’s first battlecruiser, which ultimately survived the war to be scuttled in the infamous incident at Scapa Flow on 21 June 1919, in better than very fine condition.
