A lovely cobalt blue glazed teacup and saucer set, the teacup presents a first class iron cross on the side, on a white background surrounded by a gilt wreath, the interior of the cup is completely gilt, with a soft gilt raised handle, the base is marked denoting the manufacture by Rosenthal of Bavaria, also marked 5218 16, measures 98mm (w – including the handle) x 104mm (h – inclusive of handle), glaze in tact, in extremely fine condition. The saucer is glazed deep rich blue, with a raised edge decorated with an embossed floral pattern depicting a wreath around the outside, the interior features the gilt inscription Erinnerung aus großer Zeit. 1914/15 with a thin ring around the interior, the bottom is plain with green makers mark denoting manufacture by Rosenthal of Bavaria, measures 135mm (diameter), gilt intact, no chips or cracks, in extremely fine condition. Footnote: Phillip Rosenthal began operating in the porcelain industry in 1884 in Erkersreuth, near Bavarian Selb. In 1910 and 1920, artistic ceramic divisions were opened. The company was lost during the second world war, as Philip was forced to leave Germany. His son, also named Philip, returned to Germany and succeeded in regaining control of the company in 1950. In 2000, the company became part of Hutschenreuther and is now traded as Rosenthal GmbH.
