Germany, HJ. A Member’s Knife, Transitional Example, by Carl Eickhorn

(HJ Fahrtenmesser). A transitional HJ member’s knife, measuring 25.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 14 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the tip and lower edge. Acid-etched onto the obverse is an inscription of “BLUT UND EHRE!” (“BLOOD AND HONOUR!”) in cursive script. The reverse bears a maker’s mark “EICKHORN, SOLINGEN”, situated beneath the firm’s classic squirrel logo, and above a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M7/66” for the same manufacturer. Stamped onto the reverse of the ricasso is a manufacture date of “38”. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated magnetic metal ricasso with a hooked quillon and pommel, and with an intact blackened leather buffer pad covering the seam. Two pieces of pebbled black bakelite compose the handle grip, and are fastened in position with dual magnetic metal rivets. Inset into the obverse of the handle is an enameled HJ insignia measuring 15 mm (w) x 25 mm (l). Accompanying the knife is its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. Riveted to the base is a blackened leather strap, configured into a loop for belt suspension, which retains a functional snap button. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks to the blade, moderate fatigue of the nickel plating and paint to the hilt and scabbard, respectively, resulting in some surface oxidation, and fatigue to the leather strap. This transitional example remains in a better than very fine condition.
