Germany, Heer. An M42 Stahlhelm, Repurposed Example

(Heer Stahlhelm M42). A Heer M42 Stahlhelm (steel helmet), constructed of a single sheet of magnetic molybdenum steel which retains much of a replacement apple-green paint scheme. Three rivets are distributed around the outer circumference of the shell for the accommodation of the liner pins, while the crown is flanked on each side by an integral ventilation hole. The rim remains fully uncrimped in classic M42 format. A metal ring surrounds the interior of the crown, fixed in place with the liner pins, which accommodates a replacement light brown leather liner. The latter culminates in eight fingers, each perforated with five ventilation holes and an additional top eyelet through which is looped a drawstring. Descending from the sides of the liner ring are magnetic metal loops which accommodate a replacement black leather chinstrap, marked with a simulated Reichsbetriebsnummer (RBNr.). Stamped onto the back of the liner is a mark of “SP 25”, indicating post-war repurposing for unknown service. Otherwise unmarked, the helmet measures approximately 24.5 cm (w) x 29.5 cm (l) x 16 cm (h). Issues consistent with age, wear, and refurbishment are evident, and include total repainting of the shell (which obscures maker marks on the interior), replacement of the liner and chinstrap, and some warping of the liner ring. This refurbished and repurposed example remains in a very fine condition.
