(Nationalpreis der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik in Gold mit Bandschnalle und Etui). Instituted 31 March 1949. (1973-1989 issue). Constructed of 12K Gold, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon with horizontal pinback, the obverse bearing a rightward-facing profile of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, circumscribed by an inscription of “DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK”, the reverse bearing a wreathed inscription of “NATIONAL-PREIS” (“NATIONAL PRIZE”), unmarked, measuring 26.70 mm in diameter, weighing 12.1 grams (inclusive of ribbon), accompanied by a matching ribbon bar, measuring 25 mm in length and with a horizontal pinback, both secreted within their original presentation case, constructed of pressed card stock with a faux red leather exterior liner, the interior with a white rayon lid liner and retractable red felt medal bed, the lid bearing a handwritten number “10000”, the base pasted with a label bearing a number “1100” below an unknown code, otherwise unmarked, measuring 75 mm (w) x 115 mm (l) x 24 mm (h), demonstrating a small nick to the edge of the medal likely consistent with Gold testing, a rare decoration in overall extremely fine condition.
