Description

(Orden Julio Antonio Mella) Six-piece construction, 43,8 mm wide, 47,8 mm high, weighing 43,3 grams, silvered and gilt metal with red enamel centre bearing a finely detailed bust of Julio Antonio Mella surrounded by raised gilt lettering “JULIO A. MELLA,” star-shaped base with alternating smooth and faceted rays, reverse displaying the Cuban national coat of arms circumscribed “REPUBLICA DE CUBA / CONSEJO DE ESTADO,” fitted with a period ribbon in dark crimson with a central vertical green stripe, accompanied by its corresponding ribbon bar, overall very fine.

Footnotes: Instituted by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba on 10 October 1976, the Orden Julio Antonio Mella is named in honour of the student leader and founder of the Cuban Communist Party, Julio Antonio Mella (1903–1929), assassinated in Mexico for his revolutionary activism. It is awarded to Cuban and foreign youths for exceptional service, courage, and revolutionary contribution to socialist education and defence of the homeland. The decoration is among the principal Cuban youth distinctions, often conferred through the Union de Jóvenes Comunistas (UJC).
