Canada. The Epic Of Vimy 1937

Hardcover, sapphire blue cloth cover, the front cover with the text and an image of a downward-pointing sword in gold-coloured ink, entitled "THE EPIC OF VIMY", compiled and edited by W.W. Murray, published by The Legendary (the Official Magazine of The Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League, Ottawa), printed by The Perrault Printing Company of Montreal, Quebec and copyrighted in 1936. It was published in celebration of the Pilgrimage to Vimy for the Unveiling of the Vimy Memorial, on July 26, 1938. It begins with a Foreword by Walter S. Woods, Vice-Chairman of the National Pilgrimage Committee, followed by information about the organization and planning of the trip for the 6,400 pilgrims. Through the use of vivid text and numerous photographs, it documents the voyage aboard the ships from July 16th to 25th, from departure at Montreal, to their arrival in France, including side trips to Lille, Mons, Valenciennes and Arras, before their arrival at Vimy Ridge. The Unveiling of the Vimy Memorial was attended by the 6,400 pilgrims, plus another 1,500 or so spectators, dignitaries and King Edward VIII. After the ceremony, the entourage then proceeded to Ypres, with a visit to the Menin Gate, with a subsequent visit across the Channel to England, where they visited various sites (Westminster Hall, the Cenotaph, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral), followed by a visit to Scotland (at Dryburgh Abbey and Edinburgh). A French tour was conducted in early August, beginning in Paris (Hotel de Ville, Arc de Triomphe, the Invalides, Versailles), followed by additional visits to Amboise, Blois, Rouen and Dieppe. The book concludes with a Nominal Roll (although 8,000 Canadians were present at the Unveiling of the Vimy Memorial, the roll contains only the record of the names of the approximately 6,400 Pilgrims who sailed on the Pilgrimage ships from Canada, representing all nine provinces, Newfoundland (which was not a province of Canada until 1949), twenty-one American states, the District of Columbia and Bermuda. The book contains 224 pages of text and photographs, printed in black ink, on a white semi-coated paper stock, measuring 215 mm (w) x 278 mm (h) x 13 mm (d). It exhibits light soiling on the front cover, spotting on the inside back cover and foxing on the edge of the pages, along with creasing evident in the light blue paper glued in place to the inside front cover during the binding process, however, the bulk of the pages remain unaffected. Better than very fine.
