Description

In silver, rim officially impressed in the Canadian regiment style “Private B.G Ballard, 3rd. B’n” worn on original ribbon with FENIAN RAID 1866 clasp, light contact marks and wear throughout, remains very fine.

Footnote: Pte. Benjamin G. Ballard is on the Nominal Rolls and Paylist for the Volunteer Militia, serving with the 3rd Battalion, Victoria Rifles in 1866. He served from April 1st to 28th, at Cornwall.

The 3rd Battalion, Victoria Volunteer Rifles of Montreal was placed on active service during the Fenian Raids of 1866, guarding key points in Montreal and along the St. Lawrence corridor. Although they saw no direct combat at Ridgeway or Fort Erie, the battalion carried out vital home-defence duties—manning posts, securing transport routes, and preparing for any attempted Fenian crossing into Canada East.
