Description
Description
This is a well preserved dress uniform tunic belonging to Junior Officer (Lieutenant) A.H. Miller of the Royal Canadian Artillery. It is constructed of olive drab coloured woven wool, featuring a traditional turned-down collar that transitions into a double-breasted lapel. The collar is decorated on each side with a single insignia consisting of a flaming grenade above a banner that is inscribed with “Canada” in capitalized letters, each held in place via a cotter pin on the underside of the collar. The collar is flanked on either side by a set of sewn-on shoulder boards that are sewn in place at the shoulder and secured to the uniform using a circular button featuring a crowned artillery cannon on the obverse, and marked “Firmin & Sons, London” on the reverse. Each tab is decorated at the shoulder with a badge reading “Canada” equally held in place via a cotter pin on the underside of the tab. This tunic features a total of four exterior-mounted pockets, with two at breast height and two at waist height. All pockets are pleated, and are secured shut via a scalloped flap and a singular matching button bearing a crowned artillery cannon. The two sides of the tunic are secured shut via three large buttons (missing one), all bearing a matching crowned artillery cannon, that are met by a reinforced horizontal-slit button hole on the opposing side. Above the waist-height pockets on both sides, is a single upward-pointing belt keeper, while directly above the left breast pocket, is a cloth ribbon bar with a ribbon for a British War Medal and a Victory Medal. Both sleeves are plain, decorated only at the cuff using a strip of tresse, as well as a vertically-oriented scalloped flap, decorated with two vertically-mounted padded “pips” bearing a raised Cross Pattée, signifying the Junior Officer rank of Lieutenant. The interior is partially lined with matching olive-drab coloured fabric along the back portion of the tunic, leaving the interior of both breast flaps unlined. The liner exhibits wear and tear from use, as well as moderate field-repair, especially near the vertical slit at the rear of the tunic. The interior left flap features a horizontal-slit pocket with a name tag attached to the inside of the pocket, reading “Lieutenant A.H. Miller” along with “3748” and the date “19.06.18”. The tag is maker marked “Dewsbury & Son, Newstate Street, London”. This tunic measures 40 cm across the shoulders (seam to seam), with a sleeve length of 61 cm (shoulder to cuff), with an overall length of 87 cm. The exterior is extremely well preserved, while the interior of this tunic exhibits age-appropriate wear from use, in overall near extremely fine condition.
