A short medal bar, no pin on reverse, consisting of:
A British War Medal, in silver, full size, rim impressed 681280 CPL. A. MARRIOTT. 75-CAN. INF., light wear, lovely patina, extremely fine.
and
A Victory Medal, in bronze gilt, full size, rim impressed 681280 CPL. A. MARRIOTT. 75-CAN. INF., light wear and minor gilt loss, extremely fine.
A 1917 War Dairy belonging to Corporal Marriott, comprising short daily entries throughout October 1916-December 1917, with additional contact details for important persons, multiple maps, a “places I have visited” list, and cash notes. A small black leather bound book with pencil entries, measuring 70 mm (w) x 137 mm (h), light wear, very fine. A short selection of entries include:
February 20 1917 - “Front line at Vimy Ridge”
March 7 1917 - “got invalided”
April 5 1917 - “practicing going over the top ready for Monday”
April 9 1917 - “over the top hard fighting but we got there alright”
June 7 1917 - “was out sniping in front line trenches for 16 hours got two hits today Fritz very quiet”
June 9 1917 - “wounded about 10 yds from the german line”
June 11 1917 - “saw doctor at Etephs hospital he marked my card for England”
June 17 1917 - “They took three pieces of shrapnel out of my foot to day have not a lot of pain”
Footnote: Arthur Marriott was born in Leeds, England in 1888. In 1916, he was residing in Toronto, Canada with his wife, Elsie, and working as a packer. He had served in the Leeds Rifles as a private for 4 years, and a corporal for 2 years. Marriott enlisted in February 1916 with the 170th Battalion.
Shortly after arriving in England, Marriott was attached to the 75th battalion. He suffered a shrapnel wound to the right foot on June 10, 1917, and was ultimately discharged to the 12th reserve battalion. As of May 1918, he was promoted to Corporal in the field, back serving with the 75th.
He was admitted to Princess Patricia Canadian Red Cross Hospital in October 1918 after suffering a gunshot wound to the right hand. He was posted to the 1st Canadian Ontario Regiment Depot. He was discharged to duty on February 4, 1919, and officially struck off strength in April.
Throughout his service, Marriott was stationed at Vimy Ridge, Ardennes, Chateau de la Havre, Givenchy, Arras, and Calais, amongst others.
