A 1914-15 Star, in bronze gilt, reverse impressed 71558 A.C.S. MJR. R.C. SCANES. 27/CAN: INF:, light gilt wear to obverse, residue on ribbon, very fine.
A British War Medal, in silver, rim impressed 71558 C. S. MJR. R. C. SCANES 27-CAN. INF., silver finish scattered, residue on ribbon, near very fine.
A Victory Medal, in bronze gilt, rim impressed 71558 C. S. MJR. R. C. SCANES 27-CAN. INF., light gilt loss, residue on ribbon, very fine.
A King George V Silver Jubilee medal, in silver, full size, loss of silver finish to obverse, dark patina on reverse, very fine condition.
A Colonial Auxiliary Long Service Medal, in silver, rim impressed R.S.M. (W.O.Cl. I) R.C. SCANES. 10th. Bde. C.M.G.C., silver finish to obverse worn, dark patina on the reverse, remains very fine.
Footnote: Richard Charles Scanes was born in September 1881 in England. He was a publisher in Winnipeg when he enlisted with the 27th battalion for the Great War on November 1, 1914.
He was admitted to the war hospital in Bradford on May 16, 1915, for which the entry states “At St. Eloi on April 19th after exposure in trenches, nervous breakdown.” He was promoted to acting company sergeant major (27th battalion) in the field in September 1915
He was admitted to the No. 4 Field Ambulance on April 22, 1916 for shell shock. He was transferred to several other war hospitals before being discharged on August 17th.
After serving with the 27th City of Winnipeg Battalion in the First World War, Scanes worked briefly as a commercial traveler before beginning a long career with the City of Winnipeg. Joining the bicycle department in 1919, he became assistant chief licensing inspector in 1920 and, in 1931, chief license inspector and poundkeeper. He remained in municipal service until his retirement in 1946.
Scanes continued his military involvement as a Reserve Army Major until 1939 and was active in several local service organizations. He and his wife, Alice, had two daughters. He died in Winnipeg on 24 February 1948 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
