(Ordre de Léopold / Leopoldsorde). Instituted in 1832. Type I (1832-1951). Four-piece construction, both centrepieces in silver gilt with red and black enamels, mounted to a cross and wreath base in silver with green and white enamels, unmarked, monogram "LL RR II" on the reverse centrepiece, measuring 39.8 mm (w) x 67 mm (h) inclusive of its crown suspension, intact enamels, adhesive residue evident on the reverse of its original ribbon from previous mounting, extremely fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, black pebbled exterior, monogram of King Albert I in gold-coloured ink on the lid, inside lid in white cloth, padded and maker marked "J. Fonson Médailles d'Art" (Jules Fonson), medal bed in black felt and padded, measuring 72.8 mm (w) x 121.5 mm (d) x 26 mm (d), case also extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Leopold I was instituted on July 11, 1832. It was awarded for exemplary bravery in war and especially distinguished service to the Belgian state, in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight, in Civil, Military and Maritime Divisions.
