(Orden de Mayo). Instituted in 1946. Type II (1957-1973 Issue). Civil Division. A very scarce set of the Grand Cross constructed of silver gilt, with Sash Badge consisting of a multirayed 8-pointed star, with obverse depicting an enameled white 13-pointed sun of May, bearing a period engraved female bust facing left, encircled by an enameled red ring with the inscription AL MERITO (To Merit), reverse with mirrored design but displaying a partially enameled Argentinian coat of arms on the central medallion, measuring 77.34 mm (w) x 81.46 (h - inclusive of eyelet), suspended by typical surmounted eyelet, gilt is almost completely gone, the suspension present light contact, with intact enamels, very fine. Accompanied by the Breast Star also in silver gilt, the obverse with red and white enamels, displaying a central engraved female bust facing left, reverse with horizontal pinback along with a single stay, measuring 77.33 mm (w) x 74.90 mm (h), gilt is almost completely gone, functional reverse catch, very good condition.
Footnote: The Order of May was originally established as the Order of May for Merit in 1946. It was founded to commemorate the May Revolution of 1811 that resulted in the establishment of Argentina as an independent republic. The Order was re-established as the Order of May on December 17, 1957 by Juan Perón, and it was modified on April 10, 1958. The Order of May is conferred upon foreign citizens and military personnel in recognition of a variety of meritorious contributions to Argentina.
