(Heer Porträt mit Rahmen). A portrait depicting Oberleutnant Walter Neugebauer, in uniform and with awards clearly visible, including the Knight’s Cross and three Tank Destruction Badges (Silver Grade), set within a period wooden frame featuring an intact glass face, the reverse featuring a card stock backer bearing Neugebauer’s handwritten inscription detailing the date and location of the image, said to be the occasion of his receipt of the Knight’s Cross (awarded 16 October 1944) on 23 October, topped by a magnetic metal suspension loop, measuring 15 cm (w) x 22.5 cm (h), a superb personalized display piece in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: While serving with 12. Batterie, Artillerie-Regiment 12, Walter Neugebauer effectively defended Donnerberg Hill against a sustained assault by US forces, personally destroying an American tank with a Panzerfaust. For his efforts, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross and earned the nickname “Der Teufel von Donnerberg” (“The Devil of Donnerberg”).
