Germany, Third Reich. A Reichsbahn Official’s Visor Cap, by Carl Iske

(Deutsche Reichsbahn dunkelblaue Schirmmütze). A Reichsbahn official’s visor cap, constructed of dark blue wool with a subtle whipcord weave. It features reinforced side walls which are fully lined on the exterior with a black doeskin cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the band are trimmed with red piping. Pinned onto the peak is a silvered zink insignia consisting of a Reichsbahn-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 55 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). Pinned onto the centre of the cap band directly below the eagle is a mis-matched two-piece aluminum Bahnschutz insignia, measuring 65 mm (w) x 45 mm (h). The lower edge of the cap band is flanked by gilded and pebbled metal buttons which accommodate a chinstrap constructed of golden yellow celleon wire and dark blue threading (indicating Paygroup 7a-11). A protruding vulcanfibre visor completes the exterior features, and is finished in black on the obverse and in brown on the reverse. The interior has a wide brown leather sweatband and brown oilcloth crown liner. The latter retains a transparent plastic moisture guard which bears a maker’s mark of “CARL ISKEN, KÖLN”, along with a size mark of “57”. The cap measures approximately 25 cm (w) x 28 cm (l) x 15 cm (h). In addition to the mis-matched insignia, some bending is visible to the walls and the interior liner demonstrates deterioration throughout. The cap remains in a very fine condition.
