Hardcover, cherry red cloth cover, entitled "The Second Afghan War 1878-80 - Abridged Official Account, Produced in the Intelligence Branch, Army Head-Quarters, India", published by John Murray of Albemarle Street, W., London, printed by Hazell, Watson and Viney, Limited of London and Aylesbury, in 1908. It begins with a Preface, followed by a List of Contents, a List of Illustrations (totalling 35) and a List of Maps and Plans (totalling 22). It is divided into twenty chapters: I - Preparation for a Campaign in Afghanistan from the Autumn of 1876 to 20th November, 1878; II - Operations of the Peshawar Valley Field Force, November and December, 1878; III - Operations of the Peshawar Valley Field Force from January to June, 1879; IV - Operations of the Kurram Valley Field Force from November, 1878, to July, 1879; V - Operations of the Southern Afghanistan Field Force from October, 1878, to August, 1879; VI - Events from the Peace oh Gandamar to the Massacre of the Kabul Embassy; VII - The Second Campaign. The book contains 752 pages of text, complemented by twenty-two pull out maps (most of which are in colour), the text and maps on a newsprint-like paper stock, along with multiple pages of black and white illustrations/photographs inserted at thirty-five locations throughout the book, on a semi-coated white paper stock, with gold-leaf on the top of the pages, weighing 1.5 kilograms, measuring 155 mm (w) x 232 mm (h) x 60 mm (d). The cover has experienced age soiling, with a large tear present where the spine butts the front cover, the inside front and back cover papers have yellowed, as has the side and bottom edges of the pages, the side pages exhibiting a moisture mark, the book retaining all its maps, most of which remain attached to the body of the book, however, a few have separated from it and are in torn condition, the text of the book remaining crisp and legible.
