Description
Hardcover, black cloth cover, with dust jacket, entitled "Officers Who Died in the Service of British, Indian and East African Regiments and Corps 1914-1919", compiled by S.D. Jarvis and D.B. Jarvis, entailing ten years of diligent research, copyrighted in 1993 by Roberts Medals Ltd. of Brimpton, Reading, England, ISBN 1873058 26 8. This is Volume 1 of a three volume collection known as "The Cross of Sacrifice Series". The book begins with an Introduction by Trevor J. Davies, dated March 1993, where he states: "Every Commonwealth War Graves Register known to exist was carefully searched and the information extracted. With great patience the compilers checked the information given against older publications, many out of date, to enable readers to follow up further leads where appropriate. Discrepancies of a major nature are shown" and continues "In their search to be as accurate as possible, the compilers checked names against town registers, national magazines and memorial books; the public school registers were particularly helpful. These are two numerous to list individually." This is followed by a page entitled How to Interpret the Information Given, where the reader/researcher is guided as to how to properly assess the information in the book. The bulk of the book, entailing 353 pages, lists the names of the officers alphabetically, with the notation for each officer stating: his surname, his first names, his rank, any decorations received, his cause of death, the date of death, the unit he was serving with at the time, other references, the register where it appears, and information from alternative sources (e.g. discrepancies in information, spelling differences, etc.). It concludes with two appendices: Appendix 1 (a list of the memorials and cemeteries mentioned in the list of officers); Appendix 2 (a list of abbreviations used in the list of officers - some are not mentioned as they are self evident - others are a combination of the abbreviations listed below). The book contains 388 pages of text, printed in black ink, on a bright white paper stock, measuring 215 mm (w) x 303 mm (h) x 25 mm (d). It exhibits foxing on the top of the pages, however, it does not affect the pages inside. Near extremely fine.
