Germany, Third Reich. A Land Customs Official’s Visor Cap

(Zollgrenzschutz Schirmmütze). A well-preserved Land Customs and Border Official’s visor cap, constructed of field-grey wool. It features reinforced side walls which are fully lined on the exterior with a dark green wool cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the band are trimmed with dark green wool piping, while an additional length of identical piping borders the outer edge of the crown. Pinned onto the peak is an aluminum insignia in the form of a Customs-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 72 mm (w) x 30 mm (h) and retaining all attachment prongs. Directly below the eagle, the centre of the cap band is pinned with a multi-piece Customs-style aluminum cockade and oak leaf wreath, measuring 62 mm (w) x 46 mm (h) and retaining all attachment prongs. The lower edge of the band is flanked by pebbled aluminum studs which accommodate a chinstrap constructed of twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire and green threading. A protruding black vulcanfibre visor completes the exterior features. The interior is encompassed by a multi-piece mint-green rayon liner, while a wide brown leather sweatband surrounds the walls. The crown retains a transparent plastic moisture guard which features a slot for the insertion of a name label. Unmarked, the cap measures approximately 23 cm (w) x 28.5 cm (l) x 16.5 cm (h). Minor and sporadic material fatigue is visible to the wool base, and includes some patches of mothing, while the sweatband demonstrates age-appropriate desiccation. The cap remains in a near extremely fine condition.
