Germany, Imperial. A First World War Veteran’s Wall Hanger

(Wandhänger für Veteranen des Ersten Weltkriegs). A unique First World War veteran’s wall hanger, constructed of a red wool felt bed, trimmed along all four edges with a gold bullion wire fringe, the obverse trimmed along all four edges with with a border consisting of ribbon for the 1914 Iron Cross II Class, with the top centre also embroidered with a multi-piece Iron Cross, executed with a black wool cloth base with borders consisting of a silver aluminum wire tresse. Unmarked, the hanger measures approximately 116 cm (w) x 94 cm (h). Several small holes consistent with mothing are visible, in addition to sporadic soiling. This interesting hanger, likely constructed for a First World War veteran’s organization or fraternity, and possibly unfinished owing to the void space below the Iron Cross, remains in a near extremely fine condition.
