Description
Description
(Heer Stahlhellm M42). A very well-preserved Heer M42 Stahlhelm (steel helmet), constructed of a single sheet of magnetic molybdenum steel which retains the vast majority of its original apple-green paint. Three rivets are distributed around the outer circumference of the shell for the accommodation of the interior fixtures, while the crown is also flanked by integral ventilation holes. Directly below the left vent is a decal consisting of a black shield bearing a silver Heer-style German national eagle clutching a mobile swastika, measuring 32 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). The rim remains uncrimped throughout the skirt in classic M42 style. A magnetic metal ring surrounds the interior, fixed in place with the shell rivets, and retains an original light brown leather liner which culminates in eight fingers, each perforated with five ventilation holes and an additional top eyelet through which is looped a drawstring. Magnetic metal loops descend from the sides of the ring for the inclusion of an original multi-piece black leather chinstrap which is adjusted with a functional buckle. The back of the skirt is stamped with a code of “HKP64”, indicating manufacture by Sächsische Emaillier-und Stanzwerke A.G., Lauter, with a shell size of “64”. The maker’s mark is situated above a heat code of “2447”, while the chinstrap is maker marked “E. KAMMLER, GÖRLITZ” above a manufacture date of “1940”. Notably, the liner bears dual handwritten owner’s surnames of “BURRENKOPF”, one of which is preceded by “OGF” (Obergefreiter), while a size mark of “56” is also stamped onto the liner. The helmet measures approximately 24 cm (w) x 28.5 cm (l) x 15.5 cm (h). Minor issues consistent with age and field wear are evident, and include minor scratching to the shell resulting in sporadic loss of paint and surface oxidation, the loosening of the shell rivets, and minor fatigue to the leather. This owner-attributed example remains in a near extremely fine condition.
