Germany, Heer. An M40 Stahlhelm, Single Decal Variant, Refurbished Example by Vereinigte Deutsche Nikelwerke

(Heer Stahlhelm M40). A Heer M40 Stahlhelm, constructed of a single sheet of magnetic molybdenum steel which retains the majority of its original slate-grey paint. Three rivets are distributed around the outer circumference of the shell for the accommodation of the interior fixtures, while the crown is flanked by integral ventilation holes. Situated directly below the left vent is a replacement decal consisting of transparent backer bearing a silver-grey Heer-style German national eagle clutching a mobile swastika, measuring 35 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). The rim is fully crimped, providing a smooth edge around the skirt. The interior is surrounded by a replacement foam ring, fixed in place with the shell rivets, which accommodates a replacement brown leather liner which culminates in nine fingers, each perforated with five ventilation holes and an additional top eyelet through which is looped a drawstring, and which features ventilation holes across the forehead. Two replacement magnetic metal loops emanate from the sides of the ring for the accommodation of a period but replaced chinstrap. Stamped onto the right side of the skirt is a mark of “NS64”, indicating manufacture by Vereinigte Deutsche Nikelwerke, Schwerte, with a shell size of “64”. A partially-legible heat code is also visible on the back of the skirt, while the liner is stamped with a size mark of “55-57”. The helmet measures approximately 23 cm (w) x 28 cm (l) x 15 cm (h). A heavily refurbished example, the helmet remains in a very fine condition.
