Description
(Velika zlatna kolajna Poglavnika Ante Pavelića za hrabrost). Golden Medal of Poglavnik Ante Pavelić for Bravery, struck in silver gilt, 40.6mm in diameter, it weighs 30.8 grams (without ribbon); with maker's mark "NDH" stamped on the rim (for Croatian State mint), also stamped on the rim with an official silver hallmark (rooster), and the ring is stamped "935"; small contact marks, superb period fire-gilded, in virtually mint condition and unique.
This golden medal (die is different from the large silver medal, beside being gilded) does not have an ornate suspension found on the "standard'' golden bravery medal. This specimen (possibly a prototype) was meant to be worn on the medal bar, therefore, ornate suspension was not applicable (Siniša Pogačić). The medal was almost certainly struck at Kovnica Sorlini, Varaždin, circa 1941/42. Footnote: Golden medal Ante Pavelić for bravery was worn on a unique constructed ribbon, and was worn from the second upper button. The die of the golden bravery medal is different from the die used on large silver bravery medals, as well, the suspension is different. Beside the great honour, the recipient of the Golden medal for bravery had right on title "Knight" (Vitez). Golden medal for bravery was rarely awarded, and during the entire World War Two only seven persons (five of them posthumously) received this award. As well, two Croatian units received this award. It is believed only for a short time in 1941 few medals were struck in solid Gold, while later medals were struck in silver gilt. The medal was almost certainly struck at Kovnica Sorlini, Varaždin, circa 1941/42.
