Chile, Republic. An Order of Merit, Grand Cross Set in Case

(Orden al Mérito). September 4, 1906. Constructed of silver gilt, presenting as a five-pointed star with ball finials, in white enamels, with silver gilt laurel wreath in each quadrant, obverse centre displaying a female bust, symbol of the republican government, circumscribed by the inscription “REPUBLICA DE CHILE” (“CHILEAN REPUBLIC”), reverse centre in silver gilt exhibiting the inscription “AL MERITO” (“FOR MERIT”), suspended by a detailed flying condor also in silver gilt, measuring 62 mm (w) x 68 mm (h- inclusive of condor suspension), worn on original blue and red sash ribbon, light gilt wear, in very fine condition.

Accompanied by the star of the order, consisting of a silver gilt multi-rayed star, with a five pointed white enamelled star affixed via single screwpost, gilt laurels in each quadrant, obverse centre featuring coat-of-arms with blue enamel surround, reverse with dual stays and central pin assembly, measuring 80 mm (h) x 80.5 mm (w), with enamel loss and repair to obverse 12 and 5 o'clocks arm, small contact marks, remains very fine.

Contained in the original case of issue, a brown leatherette exterior with Chilean coat of arms on the lid, silk interior lid with blue velvet medal bed which is caving in towards the base, measures 175 mm (w) x 290 mm (l) x 64 mm (d), missing the clasp device, with residue to the exterior, light wear, very fine.
