Footnote: Awarded to Private R. W. J. Smith of the Ulster Defence Regiment, this medal recognises active operational service in Northern Ireland during the period of internal security operations commonly known as The Troubles. The UDR, formed in 1970, was a locally recruited infantry regiment of the British Army tasked with counter-insurgency duties, border security, patrol operations, infrastructure protection, and support to the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

The General Service Medal 1962 series represents one of the principal British campaign awards of the late 20th century, and examples named to the UDR are historically significant, reflecting service in one of the longest continuous internal security operations in modern British military history.
