(Orden Svetog Save). Instituted January 23rd, 1883. Type I. (1883-1903 issue). A fine quality manufacture Order of St. Sava, constructed of gilded silver, consisting of a Maltese cross with ball finals, the arms of the cross in light blue and white enamels and with Serbian double-eagles with shields on their chests in the quadrants between the arms of the cross, the obverse with a central white enameled medallion bearing a delicately hand-painted depiction of St. Sava wearing red robes, surrounded by a matching inscription in gilt within blue enamels, the reverse with a similar central white enameled medallion inscribed with the “1883” monogram in raised silver gilt numbers within a blue enameled outer circlet decorated with gilded laurels, suspended from a hollow swivel crown as well as a pierced ball and elongated loop, worn on an old neck ribbon, marked “G.A.S.” for manufacture by Scheid of Vienna, marked with a Diana’s Head, “A” for manufacture in Vienna and Austrian silver hallmark denoting silver fineness, measures 50.8 mm (w) x 82.6 mm (l), weighing 47.8 grams including ribbon, a fine quality and extremely well preserved example, in better than extremely fine condition.
