Greece, Kingdom. An Order of the Redeemer, Grand Cross Star, c.1920

(Τάγμα Σωτήρος). Instituted in 1833. Type II. Of fine French manufacture featuring a large silver breast star of radiating faceted rays, each ray more characteristic of French style with enhanced convex rays and detail to hand etched facets, centering a circular medallion bearing a finely painted and enamelled iconographic bust of Christ the Redeemer, surrounded by a blue enamelled ring inscribed “Η ΔΕΞΙΑ ΣΟΥ ΧΕΙΡ ΚΥΡΙΕ ΔΕΔΟΞΑΣΤΑΙ ΕΝ ΙΣΧΥΙ”,  (Your right hand, O Lord, has been glorified in power), reverse with vertical pin assembly and double stays, heavily toned, hallmarked to exterior of pin 950 silver fineness, measuring 95.87 mm (w), weighing 101.2 grams, extremely fine. 

Footnote: The Order of the Redeemer, instituted in 1833, is the oldest and highest order of merit of the Kingdom of Greece, established to commemorate the nation’s independence and dedicated to Christ as the spiritual saviour of the Greek people. The breast star is worn with the Grand Cross grade and represents the pinnacle of the order’s insignia. The inscription on the obverse enamel ring derives from the Book of Exodus 15:6 and reflects divine strength and deliverance. Parisian-made examples by Maison Lemaitre are among the most respected and finely produced insignia of the 19th and early 20th centuries, prized for their craftsmanship and adherence to official specifications.
