United Kingdom. A Pair of Chaplains’ Department War Medals

 A pair of British War Medals to Army Chaplains’ Department personnel, including one dedicated to “REV. G. C. F. CAMPBELL” for the Reverend Gray Campbell Fraser Campbell, and one dedicated to “CAPT. D.J. HAWKER” for the Reverend D.J. Hawker (then attached to the South African Army, with Chaplains holding the rank of Honourary Captain), both names officially impressed, in overall extremely fine condition.

Footnote 1: Gray Campbell Fraser Campbell was born in 1873 in Aberdeen, Scotland, to parents George and Helen. Initially pursuing a vocation as a stonemason, Campbell later trained as a Baptist minister. He served as a Temporary Chaplain to the Forces and was posted overseas in late 1918, surviving the war entitled to a medal pair. He was living in Godstone, Surrey, at the outbreak of the Second World War, and died in 1960. and married Isabelle McLean in 1908.

Footnote 2: A vicar of the Church of England, Reverend D.J. Hawker was serving on an evangelical mission to South Africa at the outbreak of the First World War. He entered military service with the Union Defence Force (UDF) with the rank of Honourary Captain, ministering to South African forces. He subsequently returned to England and was embedded with the Army Chaplains’ Department.
