Description
Instituted in 1899. 2 Clasps - FENIAN RAID 1866, FENIAN RAID 1870 (Pte. Augustin Quintal 4th Battn). In silver, engraver marked "T.B." on the obverse, measuring 36.3 mm in diameter. Very dark patina, contact marks evident on the obverse, original ribbon, better than very fine. Accompanied by six pages of paperwork conforming his award of the medal.
Footnote: The Canada General Service Medal was instituted in January 1899 and was awarded to members of Imperial forces and Canadian Militia who fought against Fenian raiders who came north during the aftermath of the American Civil War. Private Augustin Quintal, 4th (Chasseurs Canadiens) Battalion is not shown on the roll of the 134 man 4th Battalion listed on pages 67-69 or the 13 man addenda on page 283 of the "Canada General Service Medal Roll, 1866-70" by John Thyen. However, Quintal was a resident of 571 Gilford Street in Montreal, Quebec when he filled out an Application for Grant under the Fenian Raid Volunteer Bounty Act, stating that he had served at Saint-Jean Lacolle from May 15 to June 15 of 1866, the document dated April 12, 1912 and date receive stamped by the authorities on April 22nd. In addition, to confirm his identity and his service as being legitimate, a Comrade's Declaration was signed by a former member of the 4th (Chasseurs Canadiens) Battalion, Philias Lescarbeau. A third form from the Department of Militia and Defence in Ottawa was issued to Quintal, dated July 12, 1912, asking for more information, with his service in 1870 also mentioned by him and who he had served under. He is listed on the roll of the members of the 4th (Chasseurs Canadiens) Battalion as a Private in 1866 and 1870.
