Description
Description
(Heer Dolch für Offiziere mit Gehänge). An extremely well-preserved Heer Officer’s dress dagger, measuring 40 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 26 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and edges. The blade is maker marked on the reverse ricasso with the logo of Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie, Solingen. It sits securely within a nickel-silver crossguard, the obverse of which bears a raised Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, with an intact brown leather buffer pad covering the seam. The handle grip consists of a single piece of ribbed brown celluloid. It completes with a flattened and rounded pommel which bears oak leaves around the outer circumference, screwing in to maintain the dagger’s structural integrity. Wrapped around the handle is a matching portepee, consisting of a stylized silver aluminum wire acorn suspended from a strap of identical construction. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a pebbled non-magnetic metal shaft. Two integral oak leaf bands set into the upper third of the scabbard retain loops for the accommodation of a hanger. Minor running marks are visible to the blade, the portepee demonstrates minor material fatigue, and a small dent is evident to the scabbard shaft. The dagger remains in a near extremely fine condition.
Accompanying the dagger is a matching hanger, gilded aluminum loop, with two additional loops emanating from the lower edge. Descending from each loop is a strap constructed of a field-grey doeskin base topped by a silver aluminum wire tresse. Each strap is adjusted with a silvered metal buckle, and completes with a function spring clip to lock onto the scabbard’s loops. Unmarked, the hanger measures 28 cm in total length. Moderate loss of material to the doeskin base is visible, possibly consistent with wear or mothing, and the wire tresses also demonstrate minor material fatigue. The hanger remains in a very fine condition.
