Hardcover, embossed insignia of The Middlesex Regiment on the front and back scarlet red cloth covers, text on the spine in gold-coloured ink, entitled "The Story of The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) by Charles Lethbridge Kingsford, M.A., F.S.A., published by the offices of "Country Life" in London in 1915. It begins with a Preface, followed by a Table of Contents, a List of Illustrations and an Introduction by the author. The book is divided into seventeen chapters: I - Early History of the 57th, 1755-1776; II - The American War, 1776-1781; III - Nova Scotia and England, 1782-1793; IV - The 77th in India, 1787-1807; V - Flanders and the West Indies, 1793-1803; VI - The Two Regiments at Home, 1803-1811; VII - The Peninsular War: Albuera and El Bodon, 1809-1811; VIII - The Peninsula War: Ciudad Rodrigo to Toulouse, 1812-1814; IX - Forty Years of Peace, 1814-1854; X - The Crimean War, 1854-1856; XI - Little Wars of the 57th, 1856-1881; XII - The Middlesex Regiment; XIII - The South African War, 1899-1902; XIV - The Expansion of the Regiment, 1900-1914; XV - The Great War: Mons to Ypres, 1914; XVI - The Great War: France and Flanders, 1915; XVII - The Great War: Service Overseas, 1915-16. It concludes with five Appendices, a nine page Index and sixteen pages of a Catalogue of Books published at the offices of "Country LIfe". The book contains 274 pages, printed in black ink, the text and line drawings on a thick off-white paper stock, one colour plate of entitled "Private: Grenadier Company: 57 Foot: 1775" placed before the title page, with multiple black and white plates inserted at various intervals throughout the book, printed on a white semi-gloss paper stock, plus a fold-out map placed after the Index (The Peninsula) on an cream-coloured paper stock, measuring 150 mm (w) x 235 mm (h) x 37 mm (d). It exhibits sunning on the and light wear on the covers, soiling and discolouration on the edges of the pages, along with spotting on both inside covers, the contents of the book unaffected. Fine.
