Hardcover, satin smooth white cover bearing a photo of the ribbon for The Royal Victorian Order on the front and back, entitled "Royal Service, Volume I", covering The Royal Victorian Order, The Royal Victorian Medal and The Royal Victorian Chain, authored by Peter Galloway, David Stanley and Stanley Martin CVO, respectively, assisted by two other contributors, Henry Pownall and John Tamplin. Each of the sections on the Order, the Medal and the Chain were copyrighted by their respective authors in 1996, the book published by Victorian Publishing in 1996, printed in Great Britain by Stephen Austin and Sons Ltd of Hertford, Hertfordshire, ISBN 0 9528527 0 5. It begins with a List of Contents, marked "This book is number "67" of a limited edition of 1,000 copies" backing the Contents page, followed by Acknowledgements, and a List of Illustrations (twenty-two over sixteen colour plates). The first three chapters of the book deal with the Order, the Medal and the Chain, each of which has a different author. The first chapter is by Peter Galloway and deals with The Royal Victorian Order (1. The History of the Order; 2. The Robes and Insignia of the Order; 3. The Chapel of the Order; with Source References; and three appendices: Appendix 1: The Grand Masters and Officers; Appendix 2: Armorial Plates in the Queen's Chapel of the Savoy; Appendix 3: Correspondence between KIng George V and Viscount Portman). The second chapter is by David Stanley and deals with The Royal Victorian Medal (with Source References). The third chapter is by Stanley Martin CVO and deals with The Royal Victorian Chain (with Source References; and two appendices: Appendix 1: Recipients of the Royal Victorian Chain; Appendix 2: Regulations of the Victorian Chain). The fourth chapter is entitled Appointments to the Royal Victorian Order, in the date order they were issued under their respective monarchs (Knights and Dames Grand Cross (GCVO); Knights Commander (KCVO); Dames Commander (DCVO); Commander (CVO); Members (4th Class) (MVO IV) 1896-1984 later/Lieutenants (LVO) 1984-1995; Members (5th Class) (MVO V) 1896-1984 later/Members (MVO) 1984-1995). The fifth chapter is entitled Awards of the Royal Victorian Medal, in the date order they were issued under their respective monarchs.
