Description
Description
Softcover, entitled " "The March of the Prairie Men" being a story of The South Saskatchewan Regiment", by Lieutenant Colonel George B. "Buck" Buchanan, M.B.E., lithographed by Midwest Litho Ltd. of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, published in 1957 at its original price of $3.00. As noted at the front of the book: "These books may be obtained from the S. Sask. R. Orderly Rooms at Weyburn and Estevan, Saskatchewan". It begins with a note on the History of the Regiment by Buchanan, followed by a Forward by Major General H.A. Young, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., C.D. and dated June 25, 1957 at Ottawa, and a List of Abbreviations. The Regiment achieved twelve Battle of Honours: two in the First World War (Arras 1917, Hill 70) and ten in the Second World War (Dieppe, Bourguebus Ridge, The Laison, Falaise, Foret de la Londe, Antwerp-Turnhout Canal, The Scheldt, The Hochwald, The Rhine, Oldenburg). As stated by the author: "This book is most humbly dedicated to the men of the South Saskatchewan Regiment who gave their lives in two great conflicts with the reverent hope that they did not die in vain. We shall not forget them." The book is divided into fifteen chapters: I - The Early History of the South Saskatchewan Regiment; II - World War II - Mobilization and Early Training, 1939-40; III - England - Training Period - 1941-1942; IV - Dieppe - Training Period; V - Advanced Training Period; VI - Caen to Falaise; VII - The Chase; VIII - Belgium; IX - Holland; X - Holland - Nijmegen Salient; XI - Germany; XII - Occupation Duties; XIII - Holland - The Road Home; XIV - Dispersal Point - Home; XV - Return to Dieppe. It concludes with an Epilogue, a five page Honour Roll, a Summary of Casualties - War 1939-45, a List of Honours and Awards for the Second World War, a List of Movement and Battle Dates on the Continent, and a Chart of Organization, Perpetuations and Battle Honours. The book contains 84 pages of text, accompanied by multiple line graphics and photographs, plus a map of the Western European theatre (with the movements of the regiment marked on it), printed in black ink, on a coated white paper stock, the cover printed in three colour inks on a cream-coloured card stock, perfect bound, measuring 217 mm (w) x 279 mm (h) x 6 mm (d). It exhibits spotting on the lead page, creasing at the lower right on the front cover and some pages, along with a highlight present on the back cover from storage, however, the majority of pages within remain unaffected. A terrific resource book for Second World War collectors and researchers of The South Saskatchewan Regiment. Very fine.
